After 9/11 in 2001, the terrorist attack on New York City, the United States have deployed troops to Afghanistan vowing to support democracy and remove the terrorist threat. The US military has been in Afghanistan since 2001 up until 2021. The Taliban, a Islamist militant group, was one of the most powerful groups in the area during this 20 year conflict that the US has fought against. However, during these 20 years, many Americans have been angry with the massive costs and deaths of war while many citizens in the Middle East have been angered by American intervention and presence in the region. President Joe Biden has announced that on September 11th of 2021, the US military will fully withdraw from Afghanistan. As more and more troops have been withdrawing, the Taliban has regained power, capturing Kandahar and Herāt, Afghanistan's 2nd and 3rd largest cities. The Taliban also now controls 12 out of 34 provincial capital cities in Afghanistan which has been a devastating loss for the government of Afghanistan.
